Quito's historic center and many residential areas are built on steep hills with narrow, uneven pavements, making a carrier more practical than a stroller for much of the city. The northern new town (La Mariscal, Gonzalez Suarez) has somewhat flatter, more manageable streets. At 2,850m altitude, plan a slow first day and watch toddlers for signs of altitude discomfort.

🍽️Food & Eating

Family bakeries and juice stands selling fresh tropical fruit are easy, healthy stops throughout the city. Restaurants in the new town and shopping malls like Quicentro cater well to families with high chairs and simple menu options. Tap water isn't recommended for drinking, stick to bottled water throughout the stay.

🛡️Safety

Quito has a more mixed safety reputation than other capitals on this list; stick to the new town and well-touristed parts of the historic center, and avoid walking after dark. Pickpocketing and occasional muggings occur, so keep valuables minimal and out of sight. Altitude sickness is a genuine consideration for young children, watch for poor sleep or unusual irritability.

🏥Hospitals

Hospital Metropolitano and Hospital de los Valles are the top private hospitals, both with pediatric departments and some English-speaking staff. Pharmacies (Fybeca, Sana Sana) are common in the new town for everyday medical needs. Given the altitude and safety considerations, comprehensive travel insurance covering medical evacuation is worth having.
