The historic center is touristy and generally safe during the day, though pickpocketing occurs in crowded market areas so keep bags zipped and close. Altitude sickness is the real hazard here: watch toddlers for unusual fussiness, poor sleep, or loss of appetite, and consult a doctor if symptoms seem serious. Traffic on narrow streets can be chaotic, so hold hands firmly near roads.

Clinica Pardo and Hospital Regional del Cusco both handle altitude-related and general emergencies, though English-speaking staff is more reliable at Clinica Pardo. Many hotels keep oxygen tanks on hand for guests struggling with altitude, worth asking about at check-in. Pharmacies sell soroche pills and coca tea for altitude symptoms, though check with a pediatrician before giving anything to a toddler.
