Palermo's historic centre has narrow, crowded streets, uneven pavements and heavy scooter traffic that make strolling genuinely difficult, so a carrier works better for exploring markets like Ballaro or the old town. The seafront at Mondello, just outside the city, is flatter and easier for a pram.

🍽️Food & Eating

Palermo's street food culture (panelle, arancine, sfincione) is cheap, filling and easy to share with kids, and the city's markets are an experience in themselves, if a little overwhelming for younger toddlers. Sit-down trattorias are widely available and used to families. Supermarkets carry standard baby brands.

🛡️Safety

Palermo's traffic is chaotic by Italian standards, so hold hands firmly near roads and don't expect cars or scooters to stop at crossings. Tap water is generally safe but many locals prefer bottled. Petty theft can occur in crowded market areas, so keep bags zipped and close.

🏥Hospitals

Ospedale dei Bambini G. Di Cristina is a major children's hospital and one of the best pediatric facilities in Sicily. English-speaking staff are less common than in northern Italy. Pharmacies are plentiful throughout the city centre.
