Oaxaca's colonial center has narrow sidewalks, cobblestones, and frequent curbs, making strolling genuinely hard work. A structured carrier is the better choice for exploring the zocalo, markets, and churches. The altitude (around 1,550m) can also make toddlers a little more tired than usual for the first day or two.

🍽️Food & Eating

Oaxacan food is rich and flavorful (think mole, tlayudas, and quesillo) and most restaurants are relaxed about kids, though spice levels can be high, so ask for dishes mild. Mercado 20 de Noviembre is a fun, informal spot to try small portions of different foods. Stick to bottled water and freshly cooked, hot food from busy stalls.

🛡️Safety

Oaxaca city itself is calm and walkable, with petty theft the main risk in crowded markets rather than violent crime. Some rural areas of the state see occasional political protests (bloqueos) that can disrupt road travel, so check local news before day trips. Tap water isn't safe to drink.

🏥Hospitals

Hospital Reforma and Clinica Hospital San Felipe are the main private options, though English-speaking staff are less guaranteed than in beach resort towns, it's worth having translation apps ready. Pharmacies are everywhere in the center. For anything serious, Mexico City is a short flight away.
