The Golden Mile beachfront promenade is flat, wide, and stroller-friendly for miles, with ramps at every access point, making it one of South Africa's easiest cities for pushing a stroller. Inland neighborhoods are more car-oriented with patchier pavements.

Durban's Indian-influenced food scene means mild bunny chow and curries can be toned down for kids, and beachfront restaurants along the promenade almost all have kids' menus and high chairs. Spur and Wimpy locations are reliable standbys for fussier eaters.

Stick to the beachfront and well-populated areas like Umhlanga, and avoid walking alone after dark, particularly around the harbor and CBD. The Indian Ocean water at Durban's beaches has strong currents in places, so use the protected, lifeguarded and shark-netted swimming areas.
