Zermatt is entirely car-free, which sounds ideal for strollers, but the village's narrow, sometimes cobbled or gravelled lanes and steep sections make it harder going than a flat city. Electric taxis and hotel shuttles can move luggage and tired toddlers around, and the Gornergrat and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise cable cars are step-free from the base stations.

🍽️Food & Eating

Mountain restaurants and village pizzerias are generally welcoming to families, with simple pasta and rosti dishes that work well for toddlers. Prices are high across the board, even at supermarkets, so budgeting for food here needs more headroom than a typical Swiss city.

🛡️Safety

Zermatt is very safe with essentially no crime, and being car-free removes a lot of the usual street hazards for young children. The main risks are altitude (the village sits above 1,600m and cable cars go much higher) and mountain weather, so pace outings and keep sun protection and warm layers on hand even in summer.

🏥Hospitals

Zermatt has a small local medical centre for everyday issues, but anything serious is transferred to Spital Visp in the valley below, about 40 minutes away by train or helicopter in urgent cases. Most doctors and pharmacy staff in the village are used to international visitors and speak English.
