Tromso is genuinely a winter destination for most family visitors, chasing the northern lights, and snow and ice on pavements from October to April make a stroller impractical for a lot of the year. Most local families use a sled (pulk) or a baby carrier instead once snow settles in. In summer the compact centre and Storgata are easy enough to push a stroller around.
π½οΈFood & Eating
Tromso's restaurant scene is small but welcoming, with places like Emmas Drommekjokken used to family bookings if you call ahead. Supermarkets (Kiwi, Rema 1000) are the practical choice for most meals given how expensive dining out is this far north. Reindeer and fish dishes are common on menus, and simple pasta or fish options are easy to find for picky eaters.
π‘οΈSafety
A small, safe city with very low crime. The real considerations are environmental: extreme cold, black ice, and short daylight hours (near-total darkness in December) mean proper thermal layers for a toddler are essential, and northern lights tours at night run late past normal bedtimes.
π₯Hospitals
University Hospital of North Norway (UNN) is the main referral hospital for the whole Arctic region and has strong English-speaking staff. Pharmacies are centrally located and well stocked, though it's worth bringing a stock of any specific children's medicine given the remote location.
