The Altstadt (old town) is mostly flat and pedestrianised, with smooth pavement along the Salzach river, though some side lanes near the Getreidegasse have cobblestones that jolt a stroller. The Monchsberg cliffs above town are reached by lift, not stairs, so you can bring a stroller up for the views without a climb.

Austrian restaurants are relaxed about children, and most offer a Kinderteller (kids' plate) of schnitzel, spaetzle, or pasta with a small portion size and price. Cafes serving Sacher torte and other pastries double as easy pit stops with high chairs, and supermarkets like Billa and Spar are well stocked for self-catering.

Salzburg is a small, orderly city with very low crime, and pedestrian zones in the old town mean fewer traffic worries than most European capitals. Tap water is safe and pleasant to drink straight from the tap. Winters bring icy pavements, so check underfoot conditions if visiting outside the May to September window.

🏥Hospitals

Salzburg's university hospital, Universitatsklinikum Salzburg (SALK), has a dedicated children's department and handles emergencies for visitors. Pharmacies (Apotheke) are found throughout the centre and can help with minor issues like fevers or ear infections. English is spoken by most medical staff, though a translation app is handy at smaller clinics.
