Parent Tips

🚼Pram

Riga's Old Town has some cobblestones but the wider boulevards (like Brīvības iela) and the Vērmanes Garden area are smooth and stroller-friendly. Trams and buses are low-floor and easy to board with a pushchair. Parks like Bastejkalns, right along the canal, are flat, shaded, and popular with local families.

🍽️Food & Eating

Family-friendly chains like Lido (a Latvian self-service buffet, some locations have a play area) make ordering simple for fussy eaters. Most restaurants welcome children and will happily heat a bottle or bring a high chair without being asked. Central Market (Centrāltirgus), housed in old Zeppelin hangars, is a fun stop for fresh fruit and bread if you're self-catering.

🛡️Safety

Riga is a low-crime capital and petty theft in tourist areas is rare, though it's still sensible to keep an eye on bags during busy summer festivals. Tap water is safe to drink. Winters are icy, so if you're travelling outside the summer months bring proper footwear for slippery pavements.

🏥Hospitals

Children's Clinical University Hospital (Bērnu klīniskā universitātes slimnīca) is the main pediatric hospital and has staff who speak English. Pharmacies (aptieka) are widespread and well stocked with familiar over-the-counter brands. EU health cards are accepted, but travel insurance is still recommended for non-EU visitors.
