Montevideo is flat and walkable, with the long Rambla waterfront promenade offering miles of smooth, stroller friendly path along the river. Pocitos and Punta Carretas are the most family-friendly, well-paved neighborhoods to base yourself in. Public buses aren't very stroller accessible, but taxis are affordable and easy to flag.

🍽️Food & Eating

Parrillas (grill restaurants) are a Uruguayan institution and generally very welcoming to families, with simple grilled meat and sides that toddlers take to easily. Chivito sandwiches and empanadas from casual cafes are easy, portable options for a quick toddler meal. Tap water is safe to drink throughout the city.

🛡️Safety

Montevideo is one of the safer capitals in South America, with a relaxed, unhurried pace that suits family travel. Standard precautions apply in crowded areas like the Mercado del Puerto, but violent crime against tourists is rare. Sun exposure along the Rambla is the main practical concern in summer (Dec to Mar).

🏥Hospitals

British Hospital and Hospital Britanico both have strong reputations and some English-speaking staff, popular with expat families. Pharmacies (Farmashop) are widespread and well-stocked with standard pediatric medicines. Uruguay's healthcare system is generally considered one of the better ones in South America.
