A relaxed, low crime tourist town, but the ocean here is not for swimming: marine stinger nets are essential at Four Mile Beach from roughly November to May, and saltwater crocodiles mean sticking to patrolled, netted areas only. Sun protection is critical given the tropical UV index.

Port Douglas Hospital handles routine care and minor emergencies, with Cairns Hospital (about an hour south) the nearest major facility for anything serious. Pharmacies in town stock standard child medicines and sun care.
