Georgetown's UNESCO old town has charming but uneven five-foot ways and cobbles, so a carrier is handy for street art and temple hopping there.

Penang is Malaysia's food capital, and hawker centres like Gurney Drive and New Lane serve mild options (fried noodles, rice dishes, fresh fruit) alongside the spicier stuff. Family restaurants and malls all have high chairs, and 7-Eleven and mini markets are on nearly every corner for formula and snacks.

Penang is relaxed and welcoming for families, with low violent crime. Traffic and hot midday sun are the main things to plan around, and tap water is generally treated but most locals and visitors stick to bottled or filtered water out of habit.
