Hakone

Hakone is hilly and built around hot spring ryokans, so expect slopes, steps, and gravel paths rather than flat pavements. The Hakone Ropeway, Lake Ashi pirate-ship cruise, and Tozan train/bus network cover most transfers, but not all stations have elevators, so a lightweight stroller or a carrier that's easy to fold or wear is more practical than a full-size pram.

🍽️Food & Eating

Most ryokan serve kaiseki dinners that aren't really built for toddlers, but many now offer simplified kids' meals or in-room dining on request when booked in advance. Casual soba shops and cafes around Gora and Hakone-Yumoto are more relaxed, and convenience stores near the main stations are useful for backup snacks.

🛡️Safety

Hakone is calm and safe, with the main hazards being Owakudani's active volcanic steam vents (strong sulfur smell, some areas roped off) and slippery stone paths near onsens. Traditional ryokan rooms have tatami floors and futon bedding rather than raised beds and cots, which suits toddlers well for crawling and sleeping close to parents, though it's worth checking in advance if a cot is needed.

🏥Hospitals

Hakone itself is a small town with only a limited clinic, so anything beyond minor issues means a 60-90 minute trip to fuller hospitals in Odawara or back toward Tokyo. It's worth confirming your ryokan's distance to Odawara before booking when travelling with a very young child.
